Caring For A Pet’s Teeth

Dog Grooming and Cat Grooming

The owner of a dog or cat should make it a priority to take care of their teeth in an attempt to keep plaque and tartar at bay. Just as with human teeth, bacteria can buildup on the surface and make its way underneath the gum line, leading to gingivitis and eventual tooth decay. Taking the time to care for the teeth will help keep this from occurring.

Most pet owners bring their furry friend to a veterinarian for yearly checkups. At this time, the doctor will use a scaling instrument to remove buildup from the teeth. They will inspect the pet’s mouth and make recommendations if there is tartar present. This may be a medication to give to the pet. It could also be an increase in brushing frequency.

To brush a pet’s teeth, a special toothbrush and toothpaste will need to be used. These can be found in any pet store. The pet should be introduced to the flavor of the toothpaste by allowing it to be licked off of the brush. After several days of an interest in the toothpaste, the owner can attempt to brush a few of their pet’s teeth. The sessions will become longer and longer after the pet becomes accustomed to this daily routine. The brushing will help remove the harmful bacteria and the pet will enjoy the time with their owner.

Treats can be given to the pet after a successful session. They will become accustomed to having this at the end of the brushing, and will look forward to this as well. Look for a tartar control dog or cat food to offer to the pet as an additional way to offer protection.

Taking the pet to a groomer is another way to get added help in tooth care. The groomer will look over the condition of the teeth and do a brushing regimen of their own to help brighten them. When bringing a cat to a cat grooming session, it may be a good idea to bring along a paste they are used to. Make sure to bring treats to a dog grooming session so they will have that reassurance after they have a successful treatment.
