Summer Grooming Tips For Pet Owners

Pet owners should not underestimate the positive effects of regular grooming when it comes to pet health. No one would argue that establishing and maintaining a proper hygiene regimen is essential to living a healthy lifestyle. What some pet owners don’t consider is that their dogs and cats require much of the same regular care, but are unable to provide it for themselves. This becomes twice as important during the hot summer months, when companion animals often spend more time outdoors.

Exposure to fleas and ticks can have effects that range from mildly irritating to life threatening. But there’s nothing like a flea bath for both protecting pets and keeping them smelling clean. Medicated baths can also help combat the skin allergies that some dogs are prone to in the summer months, when pollen abounds and piles of grass clippings provide ample temptation for a good roll on the ground for many pets. Other issues such as dry skin and the occasional hot spot are also alleviated by these types of baths.

Some dog breeds have coats that may require a little extra maintenance in the heat. Malamutes, chows, collies, and many others have a thick under layer of fur that can become matted and uncomfortable. This problem only grows worse in the summer, when swimming and rolling in the mud become popular past-times for many dogs. Regular brushing is an absolute must, and should be performed in sections brushing against the direction of fur growth. Start at the head, working all the way down to the tail. Inexperienced owners may want to consult with a professional groomer about special brushes and other products available to help with this sometimes tedious process.

Other aspects of grooming and regular preventative care are equally important year round, and often neglected. One of the first things that most people do upon waking up is brush their teeth. And with good reason! Good dental hygiene is important for both oral health and general well-being. Regular brushing of animal’s teeth can prevent tooth decay and gum issues, and it can be performed in the home by pet owners. Professional groomers often offer dental services as well, but the first line of defense against poor oral health can take place right in the comfort of home.
