Taking Care Of Your Pets Teeth

Pets Teeth

When someone has dogs and cats of their own, they will want to take the appropriate steps in their health care. Both of these pets need special care with their teeth so they remain clean and free of tartar. Like people, a dog or cat’s teeth can cause a variety of health problems if they are not cleaned.

Most people will bring their pet to a veterinarian once or twice a year to have a physical done. At this time, the doctor will take a look at the dog or cat’s teeth for tartar buildup. They will scale away any excess using a metal tool. While this is helpful in cleaning the teeth, it is much like a dental visit. Oral care between appointments is also necessary.

The pet’s teeth can be cared for by their owner to keep them in the best possible shape between veterinarian appointments. Many find that giving their dog or cat crunchy tartar-removing snacks made especially for tooth health is helpful. These treats are abrasive and rub away bacteria and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth when they are eaten.

It is best to purchase a dog or cat toothpaste to remove bacteria from teeth. This is usually a meat-flavored substance which dogs and cats find to be pleasing when it is placed on their teeth. The pet owner will need to use a toothbrush made especially for pets to rub the toothpaste over the dog or cat’s teeth. Try to clean one or two teeth during the first session and increase the number each day. The pet may be a bit upset about the process at first, but with routine daily apply they will get used to the procedure and may actually start to enjoy it.

Make sure to feed the pet only appropriate foods made especially for dogs or cats. Giving a pet food that humans eat can cause decay to their teeth. Keep the pet’s water dish filled so they are able to get a drink during any time of the day or night that they wish. This aids in the removal of bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth as well.
